Understanding Gujarati Unicode and Legacy Fonts
In the earlier era of Gujarati desktop publishing (DTP) across CorelDRAW, Adobe PageMaker, and MS Word 97, font designers created non Unicode ASCII fonts such as Kap 127, Gopika, LMG Arun, Sulekh, Harikrishna, and Akruti. These fonts mapped Gujarati character shapes onto Latin/English keyboard characters.
While legacy fonts worked well for offline printing, they completely fail on modern platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Google Search, and iOS/Android devices) because other devices see them as meaningless English gibberish. Unicode solves this permanently by giving every Gujarati character its own universally standardized digital code point.
